Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team is likely designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
