Astronaut Shares Depression Following Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
